Tech corporations, including giants like Microsoft, often shine the spotlight on AI agents as platforms for increased business efficiency and economic gains, but there’s a growing interest in also showcasing their potential benefits for altruistic purposes. One nonprofit organization, Sage Future, backed financially by Open Philanthropy, recently kicked off an exploratory effort featuring a quartet of advanced AI models assigned to carry out charitable fundraising entirely within a virtual interface.
Unlike standard business implementations, these “agent” models included two of OpenAI’s prominent new systems known as GPT-4o and GPT-o1, alongside Anthropic’s leading-edge Claude models, specifically versions 3.6 and 3.7 Sonnet. These autonomous models were intriguingly permitted full autonomy to independently determine their choice of charity and creative methods to attract public attention and encourage charitable contributions.
The experiment delivered noteworthy results after approximately seven days, culminating in monetary donations totaling $257, which benefitted Helen Keller International, a charity well regarded for providing essential vitamin A supplementation to vulnerable children globally. Although impressive as a technical showcase, the fundraising wasn’t entirely independent, considering donations primarily originated from human viewers offering input and guidance suggestions to the AI models alongside financial contributions.
Despite these limitations, Adam Binksmith, who serves as Sage Future’s director, maintains confidence in the project’s significance, emphasizing its practical demonstration of the current scope and limitations of AI agent capabilities. Binksmith highlights how essential these insights are, stating clearly in an interview that the public deserves transparency about what these incredibly promising technologies are realistically able to achieve and what challenges still lie ahead.
Surprisingly, this group of agents proved highly resourceful in their endeavors, effectively collaborating through a coordinated group messaging interface and utilizing tools readily available online, such as maintaining Gmail accounts specifically set up for email campaigns. Beyond email, the agents effortlessly collaborated on Google Docs, conducted thorough research to ascertain the amount of money required by Helen Keller International to significantly impact children’s lives (approximately $3,500 per life saved), and went as far as establishing social media presence by creating promotional accounts on X.
Binksmith pointed to a particularly notable incident involving one of the Claude models, which revealed the agent’s creativity and initiative in problem solving. When needing a suitable profile picture for its X profile, this agent proactively created a free account on ChatGPT, produced several image options, conducted an online survey among human participants to determine the preferred option, subsequently downloaded the selected image, and successfully updated its social media profile, demonstrating a striking example of adaptive autonomy.
However, these advancements aren’t without acknowledgment of the significant obstacles the agents encountered. At various moments, technical difficulties arose where the agents seemed restricted in progress or direction, leading to necessary intervention from human supervisors who provided supplemental feedback to rectify the issue.
Notably, occasional distractions occurred, such as unexpected engagement with internet-based games like World, leading to unproductive interruptions. One instance even saw GPT-4o temporarily suspend its activities spontaneously, halting its workflow for approximately an hour with no immediate explanation available, highlighting some level of unpredictability.
Looking towards future project iterations, Binksmith remains hopeful and confident about deploying more advanced AI agents capable of overcoming these technical hurdles independently. Sage Future plans ongoing adjustments to the experiment, promising to incorporate continuously advancing models with increasingly sophisticated skills to evaluate their viability and potential efficiency in real-world scenarios.
Future trials under consideration by the nonprofit include assigning distinct, competitive, or harmonized objectives to multiple agent groups, adding intriguing dynamics including possibly introducing a covert saboteur agent. Additionally, Binksmith foresees the critical need for robust technical oversight solutions to ensure these increasingly capable AI participants operate safely and ethically.
As Sage Future moves forward exploring these innovative AI-driven experiences, the organization’s greatest hope remains positively oriented towards genuine philanthropic achievement. Success here won’t solely be measured by advanced technological demonstrations but rather through tangible impacts improving human lives globally.
