AI company Cohere has added Ottogrid to its portfolio, acquiring the Vancouver startup that specializes in tools for automating advanced market research in enterprise settings. Ottogrid cofounder Sully Omar shared the news online, stating that while the Ottogrid product will soon be discontinued, customers will have enough time to adjust to this change.
Omar expressed enthusiasm about joining forces with Cohere, saying the integration will help transform the way businesses automate operations, enrich databases, and scale up efficiency. Cohere declined to comment on the specifics of the deal but confirmed plans to build upon Ottogrid’s expertise.
Strategic Shifts and Future Integration
This move arrives during a period of transition for Cohere, who recently missed their ambitious revenue targets for 2023, reaching only a small fraction of earlier projections. However, Cohere reports that a new strategy has pushed their annualized revenue to one hundred million dollars, mainly by catering to clients in healthcare, government, and finance with private AI deployment.
Ottogrid, initially founded as Cognosys last year by Omar and Homam Malkawi, underwent a significant rebranding in late 2024, unveiling new features and bridging numerous integrations. The platform offers customers AI-driven document analysis via a user-friendly table interface, streamlining tasks like pulling web data directly into spreadsheets or automating sales lead enhancements.
Backed by two million in funding from high-profile investors, Ottogrid drew the interest of Cohere cofounders and other tech leaders prior to the acquisition. As Ottogrid transitions into its new role within Cohere, the focus will shift to enhancing North, Cohere’s newest ChatGPT-inspired tool designed to help professionals summarize material and manage knowledge work.
Cohere’s CEO, Aidan Gomez, expressed excitement about merging Ottogrid’s innovations into North, aiming to deliver advanced research solutions with intelligent table features. This collaboration is expected to boost workplace productivity and bring smarter automation tools to enterprise users.
