Google unveiled a significant update for its Google Gemini chatbot app, introducing the ability to edit both artificial intelligence generated visuals and photos sourced directly from a user’s device. This advancement allows individuals to tweak their own pictures or work with Gemini’s creations, with the new feature becoming accessible to users straight away in phases.
Soon, users across many regions will benefit from support in more than 45 languages, expanding accessibility. The release builds upon a prior pilot project in the AI Studio platform, which made headlines earlier this year after being criticized for its controversial watermark-removal function.
New Gemini Image Editor Features
Gemini’s refreshed interface now enables a more interactive editing process, giving users integrated text and image feedback for more tailored results. Functions like swapping backgrounds, replacing items within photos, and adding creative elements are now possible directly in-app.
For instance, a person can upload their own snapshot and command the system to show them with a new hair color, all through conversational prompts. Gemini is also capable of illustrating ideas to accompany stories, such as creating artworks for a bedtime narrative featuring dragons.
These AI image editing powered changes raise concerns about the potential misuse of such technology, including the possibility of creating convincing deepfakes. To address such fears, Google embeds invisible watermarks in every image altered or made with Gemini’s internal tools and is currently testing obvious watermarks for extra transparency.
