Google is making a sizable investment in Warby Parker, pledging up to $150 million to collaborate on smart glasses that utilize Android XR technology. Initial funding of $75 million has already been provided, with another $75 million to follow if Warby Parker achieves certain progress markers.
In addition to this partnership, Google detailed fresh collaborations with global eyewear and technology companies during its I O 2025 event. Samsung and Gentle Monster are among those teaming up with Google to bring Gemini AI and augmented reality features to upcoming eyewear.
Strengthening Ties for Next Generation Wearables
Google’s approach closely mirrors that of Meta, which saw success with Ray Ban manufacturer EssilorLuxottica by focusing on classic design and recognizable branding for its smart glasses. Warby Parker’s widespread appeal and retail presence set the stage for a similar strategy, potentially offering consumers stylish and functional glasses through familiar retail channels.
Looking ahead, Warby Parker Android XR and Google have announced plans to release multiple products gradually. Their debut range of AI driven eyewear, available in both prescription and non prescription versions, is scheduled to arrive after 2025 and will feature advanced multimodal artificial intelligence. Among the anticipated releases is a pair of Google smart glasses that aims to rival Meta’s Ray-Ban collaboration.
