Google is stepping up in the wearable tech arena by joining forces with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to produce smart glasses built on its Android XR system. At its I O 2025 conference, Google signaled its intention to compete with Ray Ban Meta by creating various models of smart glasses and headsets alongside different industry partners.
Last year, Google teamed up with Qualcomm and Samsung to introduce the Android XR initiative, though it initially kept device details under wraps. The recent announcements now make clear that hardware and software platforms are being developed to support a future ecosystem of smart eyewear.
AI Integration and Prototype Showcases
Google revealed it is deepening its collaboration with Samsung to focus on XR glasses, with both companies working on robust platforms for developers. In line with this, Samsung previously introduced Project Moohan, a mixed reality headset that is expected to arrive later in the year.
At the event, Google unveiled prototype glasses leveraging Gemini AI on top of the Android XR platform. These glasses come equipped with a camera, microphone, speakers, and an optional display on the lens to show notifications.
The concept showcased a range of possible uses, such as real time messaging, navigation assistance, scheduling, language translation, and photo capture. To refine their offering, Google said it is distributing early versions to select testers in hopes of collecting valuable user feedback.
