A new real time speech translation feature will soon be available in Google Meet, as unveiled by Google during its annual developer event. This tool relies on a sophisticated language audio model from Google DeepMind, making it possible for participants to hold smooth conversations even if they speak different languages.
Spoken words are instantly transformed into the listener’s chosen language, while preserving the original speaker’s emotion and inflection. The update offers a unique advantage for families and companies, helping grandchildren communicate with grandparents in various countries or enabling smooth collaboration among colleagues who speak different languages.
Expanding Access and Language Support
Google claims this latest innovation delivers translations with very low delay, making group discussions in multiple languages feel seamless in a way that was not possible before. As someone speaks, their faint original voice can still be heard underneath the translated audio, making conversations feel natural and connected.
The speech translation feature is set to begin rolling out in beta to consumer AI subscribers, starting initially with support for English and Spanish. Additional languages such as Italian, German, and Portuguese are planned for release in the coming weeks.
Google has also revealed plans to introduce early tests of this function within its Workspace suite for business customers later in the year. By gradually expanding support and capabilities, Google aims to simplify communication between people worldwide without language being a barrier.
