During a special interview at Google I/O 2025, Sergey Brin openly acknowledged several missteps from his involvement with Google Glass. Brin admitted that lacking knowledge in the world of consumer electronic supply chains posed unforeseen challenges when developing smart glasses for everyday users.

He emphasized his enthusiasm for smart glasses, stating his belief in the potential of the technology is stronger than ever. Brin expressed optimism that this time, Google is collaborating with experienced partners to ensure its latest effort becomes a success.

Smart Glasses Make a Comeback

Earlier during the event, Google introduced new Android XR smart glasses, nearly ten years after the initial Google Glass project ended. These new glasses draw on DeepMind’s Project Astra, enabling features such as real-time translation, navigation assistance, and advanced AI-powered interactions.

Google’s ongoing development involves working alongside strategic partners like Samsung, Xreal, and Warby Parker, the latter of which has received a significant investment totaling 150 million dollars. By joining forces with seasoned eyewear and tech manufacturers, Google aims to resolve the tough supply chain issues that hampered its previous attempts.

Brin explained that advances in generative artificial intelligence bring new practicality to smart glasses, making their capabilities far more robust than before. He also revealed his deep involvement with Google’s Gemini team, specifically contributing to multimedia and video generation advancements such as Veo 3.

Brin pointed out that he has resumed daily attendance at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View to accelerate Gemini’s progress. According to Brin, now is a pivotal moment for computer scientists, who he believes should prioritize advancing the frontiers of artificial intelligence.

Industry insiders have described Brin’s renewed presence at Google as an important driver behind the company’s intensified push in the AI sector. Internal communications have reportedly urged employees to work from the office and dedicate significant time to advancing Google’s competitive stance in artificial intelligence.
