  • Grok chatbot on X gave repeated off-topic answers about South Africa, confusing users with strange replies.
  • The glitch reignited debate over AI tools’ accuracy and moderation across platforms like OpenAI and Google.
  • xAI fixed Grok’s replies, but users still question the reliability and safety of current chatbot tech.

Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot sparked confusion on X after an unusual glitch led it to respond to many unrelated posts with references to racially charged topics in South Africa. People noticed Grok offering unsolicited commentary about “white genocide” and a controversial chant, even when asked simple questions that had nothing to do with the subject.

The issue began with Grok’s official X account, which is programmed to interact when users mention @grok in their posts. Instead of providing relevant answers, the AI repeated similar statements across multiple discussions.

This bug has highlighted the ongoing struggles facing AI chatbot technology as platforms attempt to improve reliability and moderation. In recent months, even leading companies like OpenAI and Google have encountered public problems relating to the accuracy and appropriateness of their AI models’ responses.

Broader Implications for AI Reliability

For instance, OpenAI had to retract a ChatGPT update due to excessive praise in replies, while Google’s Gemini faced criticism for dodging or mishandling political topics. These incidents reflect the broader challenge of preventing unintended or offensive outputs from generative AI tools.

During the latest Grok issue, even benign questions, such as those about sports salaries, were somehow met with statements about South African violence and political debates. Users on X shared their bewilderment, pointing out the chatbot’s repeated irrelevant and concerning remarks.

It remains uncertain exactly what triggered these odd responses from Grok. However, similar situations have occurred previously, including a case where Grok censored mentions of public figures before the instruction was quickly rolled back following public disapproval.

Currently, Grok seems to have returned to normal operations, responding accurately without unrelated or inflammatory content. xAI has not released a statement addressing the cause of this malfunction, leaving users to speculate about the underlying technical challenges and ongoing improvements needed in AI moderation.
