Meta has secured a substantial Meta, solar energy agreement, acquiring 650 megawatts from AES-led projects located in Kansas and Texas. These new ventures will deliver 400 megawatts in Texas and 250 megawatts in Kansas, reinforcing Meta’s commitment to powering its expanding data centers focused on artificial intelligence.
With more than 12 gigawatts of renewable power already in its arsenal, Meta continues to ramp up its dependence on sustainable energy sources. The contracts for these new solar projects usually span 15 to 20 years, aligning with the standard practice of arranging power purchase agreements well ahead of their operational launch.
Texas Leads the Solar Revolution
Meta’s energy strategy this year has been centered in Texas, including several major deals totaling over a gigawatt of solar capacity. Texas has emerged as a national leader in solar energy expansion, thanks to its abundant sunlight and efficient permitting that allows new projects to rapidly come online.
Efficient grid connectivity in Texas shortens the timeline for solar farm construction, enabling power production within months. This streamlined approach means electricity from solar can flow to Meta’s facilities even before all construction is finalized.
Financially, solar has become one of the most cost-effective ways to introduce new generating capacity, without requiring extensive subsidies. These economic and logistical advantages have attracted major tech firms, particularly those growing their data center footprints to keep pace with the demands of advanced AI applications.
