  • Mistral launches Devstral, an AI coding model available for free commercial use under Apache 2 license.
  • Devstral outperforms rivals in benchmarks, supports Nvidia RTX 4090, and fits Macs with thirty-two GB RAM.
  • Unlike Codestral, Devstral has no commercial use limit, and access is offered via API and Hugging Face.

Mistral has unveiled Devstral, its latest artificial intelligence coding model, designed in collaboration with All Hands AI. This new technology is available for unrestricted commercial use under the Apache 2.0 license, opening up broad adoption possibilities for organizations and developers.

According to Mistral, Devstral demonstrates superior performance on the SWE-Bench Verified benchmark compared to models like Google’s Gemma 3 27B and DeepSeek’s V3. The company highlights Devstral’s skills in codebase exploration and editing, with the ability to run efficiently on a single Nvidia RTX 4090 graphics card or a Mac with thirty-two gigabytes of memory.

Expanding AI Coding Capabilities

The arrival of Devstral comes at a time when AI-assisted coding tools continue to gain momentum among software developers. In the last month alone, JetBrains entered the arena with its own open coding AI, and several other leading organizations have released programming-focused models, both open-source and proprietary.

Despite advancements, current AI models still face challenges, occasionally generating code that contains vulnerabilities or logical errors. Yet the drive to boost productivity is encouraging more companies and programmers to integrate these models into their workflows, with recent surveys showing that well over half of developers are leveraging or plan to adopt AI tools.

Mistral previously introduced Codestral for programming assistance, but that solution came with licensing restrictions that blocked commercial use. The new release changes that dynamic, offering a research preview version of Devstral through platforms like Hugging Face, along with API access priced at ten cents per million input tokens and thirty cents for output.

Additionally, Devstral stands out for its manageable size, weighing in at twenty-four billion parameters, and sits as Mistral’s third major launch in just a few weeks. Earlier releases this month include the Mistral Medium 3 general-purpose model and Le Chat Enterprise, a business-focused chatbot that provides integration across multiple third-party platforms.

Mistral, founded in 2023 and backed by significant venture capital, continues to expand its suite of AI services for a growing roster of clients including financial and tech industry leaders. The company has hinted that an even larger AI coding agent is currently in development and expected to debut soon.
