OpenAI is considering letting people use their ChatGPT accounts to access outside apps, according to details posted Tuesday. The company is actively collecting feedback from developers about possible integration of this sign-in solution.
ChatGPT has quickly grown into a giant, now seeing about 600 million active users each month. To harness this reach, OpenAI is aiming to branch out into sectors like social media, online retail, and personal tech.
A user sign-in system tied to ChatGPT sign in integration would allow OpenAI to compete in a space dominated by established names such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft. These companies have long provided quick sign-in options that are widely used for connecting with third-party services.
Earlier in June, OpenAI unveiled an early version of this idea for developers who use Codex CLI, which is their AI toolkit for code written in the terminal. The preview allowed users on Free, Plus, or Pro ChatGPT plans to link their accounts with OpenAI’s API services.
OpenAI Offers Incentives to Encourage Adoption
As part of this early trial, OpenAI provided small credits as incentives: Plus subscribers received five dollars toward API use, while those with Pro plans got fifty dollars in credit for signing in with ChatGPT. The company hopes these incentives will drive both developers and end users to try out the system.
OpenAI’s developer form seeks details about potential partners, including how many people use their app and whether they already pay for AI features. Interest is welcomed from apps of nearly any scale, from startups with under one thousand weekly users to established names with over one hundred million.
The idea of a ChatGPT-based sign-in option was first mentioned by CEO Sam Altman last year, who hinted that such a capability might arrive in 2024. For more information on login options with external accounts, see OpenAI third party login. Now it looks as if the company is preparing to more seriously push forward in 2025.
No date has been announced for when users might see this sign-in feature available more broadly. OpenAI has not shared data about how many developers or companies have joined the project so far.
