OpenAI is reportedly exploring opportunities to establish data centers within the United Arab Emirates, a move aimed at boosting its reach across the Middle East. Sources suggest that an agreement could be finalized in the coming days, reflecting the company’s interest in expanding its technological landscape.
The company has previously developed significant ties in the region, having formed a partnership in 2023 with G42, an artificial intelligence business based in Abu Dhabi. That partnership was further cemented when G42 received a sizable investment from Microsoft, which is a major supporter of OpenAI.
In addition, MGX, an investment group led by a member of the Emirati royal family, took part in a recent OpenAI funding initiative. There are reports indicating MGX will also play a role in supporting the ambitious Stargate AI infrastructure project developed by OpenAI, G42.
OpenAI Strengthens Middle East Ties
These investments highlight a growing trend as artificial intelligence companies seek to work with key international partners, particularly in regions supportive of United States interests. Earlier in the month, OpenAI introduced “OpenAI for Countries,” a program designed to help build local infrastructure that better serves clients outside the United States.
The approach is designed to encourage the responsible and inclusive spread of artificial intelligence, with OpenAI emphasizing the importance of collaborating with governments seen as allies. Building data centers in the UAE would strengthen OpenAI’s presence in the Middle East, supporting its goal to foster responsible AI innovation on a global scale.
