OpenAI has announced a major upgrade to its OpenAI Operator AI agent, introducing a new model based on the advanced o3 model. Operator, which can autonomously browse the internet and interact with software in a cloud-based virtual setup, will soon rely on this new technology in place of its previous GPT-4o foundation.

The o3 model raises the bar in math and reasoning tasks, offering substantial improvements over earlier versions. While the main Operator tool is moving to o3, the API-based version will continue operating on GPT-4o for now, according to an OpenAI blog update.

Operator Model Gains New Safety Features

AI companies across the tech sector have been ramping up efforts to develop agents capable of completing tasks independently. Similar tools are emerging from Google, which has both consumer and developer-focused agents, as well as from Anthropic, whose models can manage basic computer operations.

This latest update to Operator also brings enhanced safety measures, integrating extra datasets that teach the AI clear boundaries regarding user confirmations and refusals. In their recent report, OpenAI stressed that the o3 Operator was fine-tuned with additional safety data designed especially for computer-based decision making.

Early evaluations indicate the new Operator is better equipped to avoid illicit activity and protect personal information. The technical report highlights improvements in defending against prompt injection attacks and following strict safety guidelines.

OpenAI confirmed that the o3 Operator model carries over the same multi-layered safety framework as its predecessor. However, it is important to note that while the agent is strong in coding tasks, it does not have direct access to a dedicated programming environment.

This move shows OpenAI’s commitment to not just advancing AI capabilities, but also ensuring that these powerful tools remain trustworthy and secure for end-users.
