Pinterest is taking decisive steps to address the surge of artificial intelligence generated images that have flooded its platform. After receiving significant pushback from loyal users, the company will begin labeling images created or modified by advanced algorithms to help distinguish them from those crafted by humans.

An upcoming feature will also let users take control over their experience by reducing the amount of generative AI content that appears in their feeds. This marks a significant move for a platform known for its emphasis on authentic user created pins and image inspiration.

New Tools to Combat Fake Content

When a user clicks on an image and views it in closeup, a clear “AI modified” label will be visible in the bottom left corner. The platform will utilize both image metadata and proprietary automated classifiers to identify artificial content, even when obvious markers might be absent.

In instances where creators feel their work has been mislabeled, a dispute option will be available to ensure fairness. The company emphasized its commitment to helping users easily identify the nature of the images they discover.

In addition to labeling, a forthcoming control will allow users to see less generative AI imagery in select categories that typically experience higher rates of algorithmic content, such as art and beauty. Over time, this feature will roll out to additional areas of the platform.

Users will find the option by tapping the three-dot menu in the bottom right corner of a Pin, which tells the system to recommend less algorithm driven content for that individual. Pinterest has not specified the exact launch date but promises the update is on the horizon.

A growing chorus of users has expressed concern that the proliferation of AI-generated images undermines the originality and value of Pinterest, which has long attracted people seeking genuine inspiration in niches like home decor, fashion, travel, and crafts. Online forums have echoed calls for reform, and the issue has sparked widespread debate about the future of the platform.

Despite the backlash, company leaders maintain that generative technology can serve to inspire when integrated thoughtfully. Upcoming improvements are positioned to strike a balance, giving users tools to curate their experience while still embracing innovation.

Executives reaffirmed their intention to approach these changes in a way that maintains the integrity of Pinterest and enhances user creativity. These measures aim to ensure that the platform remains a vibrant destination for all those seeking authentic ideas and inspiration.
