  • Zed editor now features built in Gemini CLI, giving users instant AI coding help within their workspace.
  • Gemini enables live AI code edits, smart suggestions, and chat, all from inside the Zed editor interface.
  • Developers can review all AI changes, keeping control and smooth workflow without switching tools.

Developers who use Zed as their editor now have instant access to powerful code assistance, thanks to the arrival of Gemini CLI integration with Zed right inside their workspace.

Gemini CLI was built with flexibility in mind, using familiar standards like markdown instructions, custom themes, and the ability to add extensions or tweak configurations. In just two months since its launch, users have contributed a thousand improvements, and the number keeps growing.

The momentum caught the attention of Zed’s creators. With Zed’s swift, open source code editor already favored among many Gemini CLI fans, a close partnership quickly took shape to bring AI assistance straight into the editor’s Rust-powered environment.

Seamless AI Help in the Code Editor

The result is an experience where writing, refactoring, and even chatting with Gemini happens right in the same space where developers write their code. When a task comes up, like generating a new function, a quick hotkey and a comment prompt bring instant results. If confusion strikes over a section of code or a cryptic error, you can now highlight it and prompt Gemini for an immediate answer.

For more of a conversational experience, users just need to use the gemini command within Zed’s own terminal to chat through coding questions and broader technical puzzles.

One of the most touted features is being able to follow Gemini’s actions live as it makes changes not only in one file, but across several, offering unmatched transparency as the AI agent works. Once done, Zed’s interface sets out every suggestion in a clear, reviewable format so developers always have final say before anything is added.

Sid Sharma from Gemini’s team summed it up: “It’s all about control and clarity for developers — you follow along with the changes and make the final decisions.”

Instead of switching back and forth between tools or copying code, the collaboration keeps workflows uninterrupted. As soon as changes are reviewed, you’re straight back to building without skipping a beat.

Developers are not limited to local files, either. Gemini’s AI can work from online documentation or API specifications, taking context from the wider world to tackle more involved requests.

Zed co-founder Nathan Sobo praised the move, saying, “We believe this puts the developer, and their flow, at the very center of the action.” For more insights about Gemini CLI for developers, check out our coverage.
