During a recent conversation with Jack Altman, Sam Altman revealed that Meta is pulling out all the stops to poach top AI talent, dangling signing bonuses as high as one hundred million dollars in front of senior technical experts.

He described Meta’s aggressive approach as “rational” given the social network’s conviction that competition for advanced AI researchers stands as its most formidable rival in the race for smarter artificial intelligence. The eye-watering packages apparently extend far beyond the initial offer, with some engineers being promised even higher ongoing compensation.

AI Gold Rush: Talent Wars Heat Up

Meta’s strategy is unfolding shortly after its purchase of Scale AI, a move that’s seen as a major push to outpace competitors. While these luxurious deals are turning heads, OpenAI’s leaders aren’t worried that their best researchers will jump ship.

“I’m really happy that, at least so far, none of our best people have decided to take them up on that,” Sam Altman said, underscoring a belief that mission still matters more than mountains of cash for many in the AI field.

Meta may be facing other challenges in this fierce contest, too. Reports suggest top engineers have been leaving despite drawing massive paychecks, drifting instead to OpenAI or other key players. His hope is for OpenAI to remain the most attractive home for AI researchers. He pointed out that their compensation philosophy centers around aligning incentives with a sense of purpose, and letting “economic rewards, and everything else” fall into place after the mission comes first.

OpenAI’s confidence in its long-term prospects appears to be a trump card. For many there, the sense of being on the verge of something truly extraordinary outweighs even eye-popping offers from competitors.

Meanwhile, a contrasting view comes from Darius Amodei, chief at Anthropic. He’s sounded the alarm that rapid AI advances could lead to massive job losses if society fails to prepare, potentially pushing unemployment as high as twenty percent and slashing white-collar opportunities.
