Comet, Perplexity’s AI powered web browser, is quietly making its Windows debut among select testers.
Where most browsers steer people to Google or Bing, Comet puts Perplexity AI front and center as the search engine of choice.
Comet’s search is different from what users might expect. Every query prompts a conversational reply, with sources and even shopping links for product searches.
Privacy minded users will probably appreciate the ad blocker, while the summarize feature offers quick overviews with a click.
AI Features Come to Browsing
A standout of Comet is the Ask Button, which digs up context about all currently open tabs, saving time otherwise wasted toggling around.
Gmail users will be able to query the browser about their email or calendar, merging personal productivity with web activity.
On the fashion front, Perplexity recently added a feature for clothes shopping that lets people generate previews of themselves in items before making a purchase.
The Windows release follows a widely anticipated Windows beta on Macs, but there is still no public timeline for a general rollout.
Aravind Srinivas, Perplexity’s CEO, dropped a few hints on social media about the coming launch, noting, “Android build is also moving at a crazy pace and moving ahead of schedule. iOS updates soon.”
Enthusiasts eager to try Comet can already sign up for a waitlist.
Interest in Perplexity has even reached the world’s largest tech companies.
Bloomberg reports that Apple may be weighing a potential acquisition of Perplexity, in part to help catch up with rivals advancing faster in AI technology.
With a reported value of $14 billion, any purchase would mark Apple’s largest ever.
While Apple faces delays and courtroom battles over its own AI work, all eyes are on whether a Comet shaped partnership could help turn the tide.
