  • Amazon Nova models use AI to automate meeting summaries and capture action items with precision.
  • Four Nova tiers let businesses pick the balance of speed, accuracy, and cost for meeting tasks.
  • Testing showed Nova Premier gives the most accurate summaries, while Nova Pro is faster for tight schedules.

Anyone who’s ever sat through a meandering remote meeting knows how much can get lost between the conversation and the actual outcomes.

Organizing decisions, next steps, and the essence of what was discussed eats up time and often leads to something being missed or misinterpreted. Automating this entire process might sound like a dream, but the rapid progress in artificial intelligence is bringing that dream within reach. At the center of this shift, automated meeting summary tools are aiming to make meeting summaries and task documentation near effortless for businesses.

These models, which power the capabilities behind Amazon Bedrock’s generative systems, can swiftly analyze meetings and produce clear, actionable summaries. Instead of painstakingly tweaking model training or laboring over massive custom data sets, prompt engineering gives teams instant control, allowing companies to set the outputs they need on the fly. This can be essential for any field, from project management to legal compliance, where the details matter as much as the big picture.

Testing the Limits of Meeting Intelligence

Amazon’s Nova lineup offers four performance tiers, each tailored to a different business need and speed requirement. Nova Premier, for instance, is the top performer for accuracy and insight, while Nova Micro is built for fast processing when simplicity is key. Using Amazon Bedrock’s distillation tools, organizations can even transfer knowledge from the more advanced models to lighter, faster options, fine-tuning their usage based on the application without starting from scratch.

The evaluation setup drew on the QMSum data collection, a widely respected test bed for meeting summaries. Researchers sampled thirty distinct meeting conversations, spanning various sectors and packed with varied topics and plenty of speakers. Testing was rigorous, with outputs judged for how faithfully they reflected discussion, their clarity, and their ability to answer key questions.

Traditional metrics fall short when it comes to truly understanding how well a summary reflects the real discussion. So, the team turned to a more nuanced approach, letting another smart language model—Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet—act as a judge. This system rated summaries on how accurately they matched the meeting content and how concisely they distilled details, as well as whether key questions could be correctly answered from the output alone.

Nova Premier took the top spot in overall accuracy, generating perfect faithfulness in its summaries, albeit with a processing time a bit longer than its smaller siblings. Nova Pro proved nearly as reliable and worked faster, making it a real contender for enterprises needing to balance quality with speed and cost. Interestingly, Nova Micro, despite its smaller footprint, sometimes edged out Nova Lite in capturing action items, supporting the view that raw size isn’t the only measure that matters.

Jasper Lee, a senior data scientist, noted, “Fine-tuning the prompts really let us direct the models to generate exactly what we needed, which is huge for keeping teams on the same page.”

Faithfulness scores varied by model, but all showed a strong relationship between depth of insight and speed, helping organizations weigh whether to prioritize rapid results or comprehensive summaries.

Claire Ramos, an operations lead, said simply, “Getting clean action items without sorting through hours of notes has completely changed how we follow up after meetings,” as shown by enhanced meeting summary accuracy in recent tests.
