Meta leans into AI with new Vibes video feed

Meta leans into AI with new Vibes video feed
  • Meta launches Vibes, an AI video feed where all clips are generated, remixed, and shared by users.
  • Users can tweak styles, add music, or post creations to Vibes, Instagram, Facebook, or message friends.
  • Early reactions are mixed as Meta pushes AI content despite backlash against overwhelming artificial noise.

Vibes is here, and no one really saw this coming.

Meta is rolling out Vibes, a brand new video feed nestled inside its Meta AI app and also live on meta.ai. Like TikTok or Instagram Reels, the feed serves up quick hits of video, but with a twist — every clip is spat out by artificial intelligence.

Mark Zuckerberg revealed the new feature with a characteristically splashy Instagram post, sharing a sprinkle of AI video oddities. Among them, a bunch of fuzzy creatures hopped between blocks, a cat playfully kneaded dough, and an ancient Egyptian woman appeared to capture a selfie from her stone balcony, gazing out over a pharaoh’s kingdom.

Expect your new Vibes feed to fill up fast with AI-made content, whether from regular users or Meta’s chosen creators. As you spend time swiping through the feed, the company’s recommendation system gradually tunes what you see.

You can opt to create your own AI generated video from scratch, or remix whatever strange creation catches your eye. Before sending it out to the world, you get tools to add visual elements, soundtrack choices, and tweakable styles. Once satisfied, you have the option to post straight into the Vibes feed, message it privately, or push it out to Instagram and Facebook Stories or Reels.

Meta’s AI Expansion Push

To get Vibes off the ground, Meta partnered with Midjourney and Black Forest Labs, both well known names in the artificial intelligence space. At the same time, Meta says it is working behind the scenes to build up its own models to handle future needs.

User reactions to Zuckerberg’s announcement were not exactly brimming with enthusiasm. One commenter bluntly declared, “gang nobody wants this.” Another person said, “Bro’s posting ai slop on his own app.”

The timing of this feed is interesting, considering many platforms are currently trying to limit the flood of generic artificial intelligence videos. Oversaturation is already rampant, with YouTube even introducing new efforts to weed out lazy or low quality uploads. The decision comes mere months after Meta itself urged creators to focus on “authentic storytelling” and original content instead of flooding feeds with derivative or pointless clips.

Meta’s renewed focus on artificial intelligence comes after a series of internal shakeups. In June, company leaders created a group called Meta Superintelligence Labs and split their artificial intelligence employees into four teams that handle foundational models, research, product launches, and the technology backbone.

Despite their commitment to catching up with rivals like OpenAI and Google DeepMind, this push into auto generated video feeds may not land as intended with users who have grown weary of endless algorithmic noise.
